Wine Tasting #6

Name: Uberlese Riesling 2022

Variety: Riesling

Country: Germany

Region: Pfalz, Germany

Vintage: 2022

Price: $10.99

Review: "Medium-bodied, lovely flavors of peach and stone, with a hint of apricot. Crisp, elegant, fresh and balanced."(wegmans.com only place I found a review of the wine and where I bought it from, not sure why)

Wine Folly: pg. 158-159. they mention in the region of Pfalz, Germany there are notes of apricot, lemon, beeswax, petroleum, and wet slate. I got a lot of the apricot and a hint of beeswax. I did not get any petroleum(although I don't even know if I would know if I tasted that or not) or wet slate. I got the Meyer lemon taste, but not overpowering just enough to taste the acidic component. They explain rieslings can be dry or sweet, I would say this wine is sweet.

My Review: This is my new favorite wine, not too sweet, but perfectly sweet with a hint of acidity to make for the perfect balance. I got lots of notes of peach and apricot. I also got notes of lemon that made for the perfect acidic taste. I got hints of beeswax, honey taste, but not overpowering like previous Rieslings I've had where those flavors tend to take over. I got a refreshing bouquet kind of taste out of this wine, maybe that is due to the light style of the wine, but I thought there was a hint of greenery throughout. My honest opinion is it tasted like if you added a bit of sugar to a pinot grigio, which is right up my alley. I did not have this with food. I will be repurchasing.

Wine Tasting #5

Name: Prophecy Sauvignon Blanc 2022

Variety: Sauvignon Blanc

Country: USA

Region: all it says is CA, but when you go to the website it says from New Zealand's region of Marlborough (for the 2020 vintage it says Central Valley, CA so I presume the same for 2022, but I assume they take the plants from Marlborough and plant them in Central Valley or possibly all over CA)

Vintage: 2022

Price: $10.99

Shop Review: "Prophecy Sauvignon Blanc is a classic expression of California Sauvignon Blanc. In the glass, the wine opens with citrus aromas of lemon, lime and grapefruit. Refreshing notes of passionfruit, evergreen and fresh jalapenos lead to a bright mouthfeel with a long, clean finish." (wine.com)

Wine Folly: pg.165-166. They state notes of gooseberry, which I could not tell you if I know what that tastes like or not, so I assume I did not taste that. I got the hints of grapefruit. It says strong herbaceous notes which is definitely the majority of what I tasted. I did not get any honeydew, passionfruit, or peach.

My Review: To start, this was way too acidic for me, I did not like it, which is interesting because in the past I have liked a Sauvignon Blanc. All I tasted was a punch of citrus mainly lemon, but also some grapefruit with some leaves. It was very crisp and acidic with nothing to balance the acidity and instantly gave me a headache each time I drank it. I really wanted to like this wine, but just could not. If there were some notes of passionfruit or peach I think this would have been perfect, but the acidity just overtook the whole wine and it was so crisp I felt it all throughout my mouth leaving it very dry and a sting on my tongue that was not pleasant. It was also very bitter. However, I did enjoy the lightness of this wine. I think if the citrus component could have been more balanced out it would have been a repurchase. I did not have this with food.

Wine Review #4

Name: Chloe 2022 Pinot Grigio Valdadige DOC

Grape Variety: Pinot Grigio

Region: Valdadige DOC

Country: Italy

Vintage: 2022

Price: $11.99

Review: "Straw green color. Aromas and flavors of lemon and lime zest, green apple, honeyed apricot, and lime blossom honey with a medium-to-full body and a medium-to-long finish with elements of green apple, white peach and pear, apricot, and pink grapefruit. Zippy acidity with enough fruit to balance and really be a crowd pleaser whether sipped on its own or paired with foods." (tastings.com)

Wine Folly: Explains notes of white peach and lemon zest, which I got especially upon smelling the wine. They also note cantaloupe, raw almond, and crushed gravel, which I did not pick up on at all. They note medium acidity and sweetness, which is how I would describe it, very crisp. (pg. 149)

My Review: My first thought was that it smells and tastes like a crisp stream of water with a punch of acidity. This wine felt very crisp and almost refreshing with notes of green apple and grapefruit. There was a slight tanginess I got in my mouth. I smelled honey, but when I drank it I did not get much of that taste- the smell was more sweet than the taste. After drinking it a lot, I noticed notes of some peach, but not as forward as some other wines I've had like Riesling. Honestly, it tasted very minerally I see that word used but never knew what that tasted like until I tasted this specific wine because it always threw me off, but this was an enjoyable minerally taste I got maybe it's not the correct use of the word, but in my head, this wine is how I would use minerality. I also got slight floral notes or maybe some green leave notes, but not heavy. Kind of mixed with the citrus-forward notes I was tasting.

I did not have this with food.

Wine Tasting #3

Name: Pacific Rim Sweet Riesling 2022

Variety of grapes: riesling

Region: Columbia Valley, WA

Country: USA

Vintage: 2022

Price: $10.99

Review: "This is indeed a sweet wine. The wine also has plenty of acidity, so it has that going for it. Aromas of lemon tarts and 7-Up are a canary in the residual sugar coal mine. Flavors like lemon drop hard candies and a peach margarita continue the theme. The wine is sweet without hitting cloying territory." (wine.com Wine Enthusiast Review 89)

Wine Folly: They explain very high sweetness levels, which I definitely experienced. They describe notes of lime and green apple, which I do not get on the pallet. I did get the beeswax and honey taste as they described. It says jasmine, too, which was definitely present  I just attributed that to the honey taste, but it is definitely jasmine. I did not get any petroleum smell or taste. (pg. 158)

My Review: This wine is very sweet and honey-forward. It tasted very candy-like, like candy corn almost with tropical undertones. I got lots of notes of a bright ripe peach. The acidity of this wine cuts the sweetness nicely, but it is definitely not very acidic just enough to balance the sweetness so it is not cloyingly sweet.

I did not have this with food.

Wine & Cheese Pairing

Me and my parents decided to go to Dominion Wine and Beer located in Falls Church, Va to do this wine and cheese pairing. I wanted to put in the menu to show just how awesome this place is first off, and also to show our selection choices despite this amazing menu. Also, they did not give me pictures of the cheeses so this is to also show the types of cheese because it came as a pretty charcuterie board. We chose Fromage D'Affinois Brie which is described on the menu as from France, Cow's milk, Triple Cream, buttery, which if you ask me Triple Cream Brie is the best brie out there and you can argue with a wall haha. Then, we got the Vermont Creamery Goat Cheese which is described as mild and creamy. Our last cheese was Mitica Manchego which is from Spain, sheep's milk semi-firm, light, and buttery.

From the wines, we chose Chardonnay The Calling Dutton Ranch 21-CA, Sauvignon Blanc, Frenzy 22- New Zealand, and Pinot Grigio Il Vince 22 from Italy. We decided to stick with all whites just to get a good comparison of how each cheese would pair or not pair. I thought it would be more beneficial to stick with all the same colors of wine, plus I am a sucker for white wine and wanted to try more of them.

Here are the wines in the bottles from Left to Right: Sauvignon Blanc Pinot Grigio, and Chardonnay.

Here are the wines by the glass from left to right: the Chardonnay, the Sauvignon Blanc, and the Pinot Grigio. Also, there is my dad featured in the picture.

here are two good pictures of the charcuterie because the more the merrier, but the cheeses are Brie most far left, then the Goat cheese which is to the right of the brie in two ball forms, and then the Manchego is spread across the board in triangles.

Now onto the nuts and bolts of this assignment:

Let's start with the Pinot Grigio, the Pinot Grigio Il Vince 22 from Italy on its own was very light and tasted like apricots and bright green leaves with some honeysuckle undertones. The acidity made it very light and almost refreshing tasting. Tasted very florally almost like a bouquet of flowers. With the brie, I did not like it at all because it made the wine way too acidic. The brie has some bite to it and when paired with the pinot grigio the buttery aspect of the cheese went away and the acidity of the wine shot up way too high for my liking. On the other hand, the manchego with the pinot grigio was one of my absolute favorites, the saltiness of the cheese with the wine allowed for all the flavors to be showcased; in the wine, I got more of the honeysuckle taste that I was tasting overall making the wine sweeter. The cheese's saltiness was highlighted by the wine, as well as the lightness of the cheese. I really enjoyed the saltiness of this cheese with the acidity and sweetness of this wine they cut through each other perfectly allowing me to really enjoy this combination. Finally, the goat cheese, was interesting because I do not know if you can see it in the picture but it has honey drizzled on it, so I tried this in two parts, one bite with no honey on it and one with. The one without honey was so bad, but honestly not many people are just having straight goat cheese these days (in my opinion), but the goat cheese on its own tastes like sour milk and is way way too acidic, which made me really not like the pinot grigio because it enhanced the acidic flavors of the wine, as we have come to find out I really do not enjoy. However, with the honey, it was so amazing because the honey brought out the honey and fruity apricot of the pinot grigio and made a perfect balance. Also here the creaminess of the goat cheese I did like in addition to the wine, unlike the brie because it felt lighter and that it added into the wine making it almost creamy, but not in a bad way.

Next, we will do the Sauvignon Blanc from New Zealand. The Sauvignon Blanc tasted a lot like the pinot grigio to me, which I did not expect and probably tells you my taste buds are lacking, but the major thing is the Sauvignon Blanc is much more citrusy forward and not as apricotty, but more fruit forward. I did not get any leave taste like I did with the grigio. This wine with the brie made the wine very sweet and creamy, which I did enjoy. The brie did not taste as dense and plastic-y and the flavors more so combined together rather than feeling like wine and cheese as two separate entities. The Manchego with the Sauvignon Blanc was amazing as well because the saltiness with the fruity flavors of the wine was the perfect sweet and salty combo for my tastebuds really allowing the fruit in the wine to come forward making the wine more sweet and fruity and then the saltiness of the cheese just perfectly balanced it out in my mouth, it was wonderful. For the goat cheese, this was my least favorite, honestly just think goat cheese is too acidic for me (there is a theme here lmao). But it was not terrible, the acidity in the goat cheese just made the wine too acidic for me, but with the honey, it did make it slightly better as it paired nicely with the citrusy component, but without the honey, the citrus and acidity made it so bad, not a good acid-acid pairing in my eyes.

Finally, the Chardonnay from CA. Let me start this with I do not like Chardonnay, my mom loves them and its all she will drink, but I can not get behind it. This Chardonnay tasted very buttery and silky with hints of vanilla. I actually liked it more than I thought I would, but I am just biased to a light-bodied white. I do not like heavier wines, which is what this chardonnay felt like. Yes, I know reds are the heaviest, but even for me I just do not like the butteriness of the chard that makes it feel heavy to me despite it being white wine. It still had the slight acidity that white wines have, but was more of an apple taste, and not like a green apple but like a bright red apple that is more sweet, fruity forward, but there is still that hint of acidity. With the brie, however, I am going to shock you because this was AMAZING. Obviously, both are very buttery, so it ought to be good, but we can see my track record I like refreshing and light, but this pairing had me loving chardonnay, never thought I would say this. I loved how creamy it made the chardonnay, but also because the brie is so creamy it almost made the wine more light, which is why I think it made me really enjoy it. It also highlighted the vanilla aspect of the wine, which usually is hard for me to find. I always want more vanilla taste in my wine and this pairing allowed it perfectly. The manchego with this wine was average because the saltiness of the cheese did not add anything to this wine, if anything I thought it clashed because it detracted from the wine's creaminess rather than adding. It did not bring out any of the flavors of the wine that I got on its own, there was no vanilla or sweet fruity flavors like the apple. It was very meh. This wine with the goat cheese was also meh. I think I messed up by doing the brie first with this wine because nothing compared, but the acidity of the goat cheese just did not match the chardonnay at all. I will say that the honey did bring out a sweeter side of the wine and was a nice addition to the creaminess of the chardonnay. With that combo, the acidicity of the goat cheese added to the creaminess in a nice way rather than a gross way and I did enjoy it because the honey kind of cut through the unlikely balance of those two making it palatable.

Overall, loved the Manchego the best with the Pinot Grigio and the Brie with the Chardonnay, those were my two favorite pairings. I did have the goat cheese with some fig jam after doing all the tastes and tried this with the Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Grigio and that was unreal it is my new go-to. I did not know I would love fig jam this much, but it made the wines so sweet and fruit froward and made the goat cheese more creamy and not as acidic and all the flavors together were just perfect, perfect, perfect.

Wine Tasting #2

Name of Wine: Notte Rossa Lambrusco

Variety: Lambrusco

Region: Emilia-Romagna, Italy

Country: Italy

Year: does not explicitly say so I would assume grapes from the most recent harvest.

Price: 10.99$ for 1.5L

Wine Shop Review: Notte Rossa Lambrusco is an Italian red wine. It has a ruby-red color with violet highlights. The bouquet is fruity and fragrant, with a perfume reminiscent of berries and cherries. The taste is captivating with well-balanced acidity and fruity finish. It is bottled at 7.5% alcohol by volume. This Lambrusco is a charming complement to all foods. It is perfect with salads, sandwiches, pizza and poultry, pork and beef dishes, and spicy food. Also delightful on its own as a refreshing drink. Enjoy! (gotoLiquorStore)

Wine Folly: pg.122. The main notes are strawberry, blackberry, rhubarb, hibiscus, and potting soil. I definitely could taste the strawberry and blackberry, but got none of the potting soil taste. There was a slight hibiscus taste adding to its floralness, but not heavy on that flavor. They note different sweetness levels, which this one would be under the semi-secco or Amabile as it was a sweet Lambrusco, not dry.

My Review: This wine is fantastic!! It has the perfect amount of sweetness, but not too sweet with a very fruity flavor. The perfect word to describe it is jammy. The sparkling aspect of this wine is perfect as it has very tiny bubbles that make it palatable and not the kind of sparkling that makes you want to burp every moment. Due to its sparkling nature, it needs to be chilled to get the crisp refreshing taste of this wine otherwise it just is not good. I got hints of a bright cherry flavor, like a cherry that has fully ripened with hints of raspberry that add to the fresh lightness of this wine. There is a very small bit of dryness that I noticed only because it balances out the sweetness, if I did not taste this aspect I would think the wine was too sweet. It is definitely a very light refreshing red wine. I am obsessed and have since bought multiple of these bottles haha.

I did not pair this wine with any food.

Wine Tasting #1

Name of wine: MacMurray Central Coast Pinot Noir

Grape Variety: Pinot Noir

Region: Central Coast, CA

Country: USA

Year: 2021

Price: 17.99$ (the Kroger wine man gave it to me at a discount) originally was 21.99$

Wine Shop Review: Central Coast, CA- Classic aromas from the cool micro-climates of the Central Coast, this wine showcases flavors of red cherry, cola, and briar complemented by nuances of sweet vanilla and oak. (Total Wine & More)

Wine Folly: p.150. This is a light-bodied red with red fruit and spice flavors with a soft tannin finish. I got the cherry very intensely, but not much of the spice. I did notice the mushroom earthy tone. I did not get much of the vanilla at all only when I smelled it. I could taste the raspberry in combination with the intense cherry flavor. On pg. 151 it discusses the Central Coast specifically and mentions plum, which I definitely got. Not much of any spice or raspberry sauce more of a fresh raspberry taste to me.

My Review: I enjoyed the wine's light-
bodied aspect and was a good start for me getting into reds. I really enjoyed the cherry flavor and definitely thought the wine was dark red fruit-forward with lots of woodsy earthy undertones. I could taste a lot of the berry flavor even noting flavors of raspberry and blueberry. I got a lot of the oak as sometimes when I went to drink it it was like chewing on bark. I decided to have spaghetti with this wine, which made me love it and really appreciate wine with the food because on its own certain sips were hard to digest due to the woodsy aspect, but with the marinara sauce it made the wine so plumy and yummy. That was when I got hints of vanilla and plum, making the wine way more palatable for me and definitely giving it a smoother finish. the acidity of the marinara sauce let the sweet flavors that I did not get on its own come through.
